The Journey upon the Roman Road begins. Chapter 1:1-6

Romans 1:1-6

1 Paul, a bond-servant of Christ Jesus, called as an apostle, set apart for the gospel
of God, 2 which He promised beforehand through His prophets in the holy
Scriptures, 3 concerning His Son, who was born of a descendant of David according
to the flesh, 4 who was declared the Son of God with power by the resurrection from
the dead, according to the Spirit of holiness, Jesus Christ our Lord, 5 through whom
we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith among
all the Gentiles for His name’s sake, 6 among whom you also are the called of Jesus
Christ; 7 to all who are beloved of God in Rome, called as saints: Grace to you and
peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. NASB.

v1. “Paul, a bond-servant of Christ Jesus,” This is the only relationship we as
believers should desire. There seems to be so many people today who have
perversely turned this relationship around. They pray, ‘do it my way Lord.’ ‘My will be
done’. ‘If you have faith enough it will be done your way’ and to others they say, “you
weren’t healed because of your lack of faith.”

That is such a messed up way of relating to God. Because He is no longer the
Master. He has been made into the slave who does their bidding and they have
become the master. Sometimes when a lot of things go our way, like when we
become rich in this worlds possessions we may start to believe, “Hey God is richly
blessing us. We must be doing His will. We must be the highly favored ones.” When
we do this we become just like the humanistic, materialistic Sadducees who liked to
justify themselves, their place and position in temple politics and religious affairs.

Act 5:17The high priest and his officials, who were Sadducees, were filled with
jealousy. NLT

Act 23:8for the Sadducees say there is no resurrection or angels or spirits, but the
Pharisees believe in all of these. NLT

The Lord had just raised Lazarus from the dead and some people had reported this
great work of God to the Rulers of the Temple and the Apostle John records their
action, 11:47 ‘Then the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered a council and said,

“What shall we do? For this Man works many signs. 48 If we let Him alone like this,

everyone will believe in Him, and the Romans will come and take away both our
place and nation.” NKJV

“…called as an apostle” literally a called apostle. Called as if to a banquet, the
wedding feast of the Lamb. Apostle, one who is sent out. “Set apart for the Gospel of
God.” Remember when the disciples were in Antioch and they were praying, fasting
and waiting upon The Lord. Acts 13:2 While they were ministering to the Lord and
fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to
which I have called them.” 3 Then, when they had fasted and prayed and laid their
hands on them, they sent them away. NASB

Gospel of God. This is the key! What is the gospel of God? A quick look at the
Greek word translated as gospel will tell you it is the good news or good tidings.
When God tells me that my sins are forgiven that is good news indeed. When I’m
told that I can be reconciled to God through the redemptive work of Jesus the Christ
that is good news, but when someone tries to tell me it is all that plus something else
that is not good news. When they say you have to be a member of their church to be
saved, that is not good news. When they say that you have to tithe to them, go to
the right services, get the right baptism, must speak in tongues or any other such
thing this is not good news. Especially if they tell you the work was not finished on
the cross, that is not good news. It is bondage. Bondage to them and their self made
religion. They are now the mediator of all grace. They are now the one who judges.
That is not what the Bible declares.

John 5:30″I can do nothing on My own initiative. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment
is just, because I do not seek My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.”

Amazing The Lord Himself could do nothing of His own initiative, but these self
righteous religious leaders can seem to do so much on their own initiative. They
often will tell you who is saved or filled with the Holy Spirit based on some religious
affiliation. Dear Lord save us from the tyranny of the tares.

Matthew 13:24 Jesus presented another parable to them, saying, “The kingdom of
heaven may be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field. 25 But while
his men were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and

went away. 26 But when the wheat sprouted and bore grain, then the tares became
evident also. 27 The slaves of the landowner came and said to him, ‘Sir, did you not
sow good seed in your field? How then does it have tares?’ 28 And he said to them,
‘An enemy has done this!’ The slaves said to him, ‘Do you want us, then, to go and
gather them up?’ 29 But he said, ‘No; for while you are gathering up the tares, you
may uproot the wheat with them. 30 Allow both to grow together until the harvest;
and in the time of the harvest I will say to the reapers, “First gather up the tares and
bind them in bundles to burn them up; but gather the wheat into my barn.”

Praise The Lord! I have no delusion that anyone is called to be God’s weed eater,
the only gardening we are called to do in His field is to sew the seed, His seed,
water with His living water and reap when the harvest is ripe. Luke 10:2And He was
saying to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore beseech
the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest. NASB. I pray, “Lord let
us see who you are calling to you so that we may serve them and show them Your
love today.”

v2. ‘which He promised beforehand through His prophets in the holy Scriptures,’
NASB. Another proof of the inspiration of the scriptures. The Lord speaking to the
self righteous Jewish religious leaders said, “For if you believed Moses, you would
believe Me, for he wrote about Me.” “But if you do not believe his writings, how will
you believe My words?” John 5:46-47 NASB

v3.” concerning His Son, who was born of a descendant of David according to the
flesh” The seed of David according to the flesh. The seed of Abraham. The seed of
the woman which God promised at the fall. Gen 3:15 And I will put enmity Between
you and the woman, And between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on
the head, And you shall bruise him on the heel.” The child of Mary. She provided the
seed in the form of her ovum according to the flesh. The Holy Spirit provided the
divine nature of Christ.

Gal 3:16Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. He does not
say, “And to seeds,” as referring to many, but rather to one, “And to your seed,” that
is, Christ.

2Ti 2:8Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, descendant of David,

according to my gospel,

v4. “and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of
holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord,” ESV. And I like
the translation on the NLT, “and he was shown to be the Son of God when he was
raised from the dead by the power of the Holy Spirit. He is Jesus Christ our Lord.” I
think this is the best way to look at it. God the Father, raised the Son of God by the
power of the Holy Spirit. Peter addressing the crowd in Solomon’s portico said, Acts
3:13-15 “The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, the God of
our fathers, glorified his servant Jesus, whom you delivered over and denied in the
presence of Pilate, when he had decided to release him. But you denied the Holy
and Righteous One, and asked for a murderer to be granted to you, and you killed
the Author of life, whom God raised from the dead. To this we are witnesses.” ESV.

See again the ‘Trinity’ is comprised of God the Father, His Servant Jesus the Christ
and the Spirit of holiness. Now all three work in unison to bring about God’s plan of
redemption. The plan that was set in place before the foundation of the cosmos.
Christ the Author of life, the Word and Will of God, but as He said three times in the
garden, “Not my will, but thine Will be done.” A subordination of will His will to the
Father’s Will. As Jesus said so many times, the Son does what He see the Father
do. I can do nothing of my own initiative, but only do what is pleasing to the Father”

V5-6 “Though whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the
obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations, incuding you who
are called to belong to Jesus Christ,”

It is through the resurrection of the dead, the ascension to heaven, being seated at
the right hand of the Father and God the Father giving him a Name above every
other name, placing everything under His authority that we can receive this grace.
And for those, whom He has sent out, apostleship to bring about obedience of faith.
Not for our sake, but for His Name among all the nations, that is linguistic, ethnic
groups, including you and me who are called to belong to Christ Jesus.

May this study we are embarking upon be a blessing to all who read these words. Do not simply take my testimony of God, but search the scriptures to see if these things are so.

May the LORD keep you and bless you for your study of His Word. Amen.

Agape,
