The Romans Road Home Chapter 3:5-20

Today we will continue our journey down the Romans Road Home by examining Chapter 3:5-20 taken from the NASB.

5 But if our unrighteousness demonstrates the righteousness of God, what shall we say? The God who inflicts wrath is not unrighteous, is He? (I am speaking in human terms.) 6 May it never be! For otherwise, how will God judge the world? 7 But if through my lie the truth of God abounded to His glory, why am I also still being judged as a sinner? 8 And why not say (as we are slanderously reported and as some claim that we say), “Let us do evil that good may come”? Their condemnation is just.
9 What then? Are we better than they? Not at all; for we have already charged that both Jews and Greeks are all under sin; 10 as it is written,
“THERE IS NONE RIGHTEOUS, NOT EVEN ONE;
11 THERE IS NONE WHO UNDERSTANDS,
THERE IS NONE WHO SEEKS FOR GOD;
12 ALL HAVE TURNED ASIDE, TOGETHER THEY HAVE BECOME USELESS;
THERE IS NONE WHO DOES GOOD,
THERE IS NOT EVEN ONE.”
13 “THEIR THROAT IS AN OPEN GRAVE,
WITH THEIR TONGUES THEY KEEP DECEIVING,”
“THE POISON OF ASPS IS UNDER THEIR LIPS”;
14 “WHOSE MOUTH IS FULL OF CURSING AND BITTERNESS”;
15 “THEIR FEET ARE SWIFT TO SHED BLOOD,
16 DESTRUCTION AND MISERY ARE IN THEIR PATHS,
17 AND THE PATH OF PEACE THEY HAVE NOT KNOWN.”
18 “THERE IS NO FEAR OF GOD BEFORE THEIR EYES.”
19 Now we know that whatever the Law says, it speaks to those who are under the Law, so that every mouth may be closed and all the world may become accountable to God; 20 because by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified in His sight; for through the Law comes the knowledge of sin.

V.5 “But if our unrighteousness demonstrates the righteousness of God…”

In the early church there were many differing sects, especially after the Gentile church was established. They allowed Greek philosophy and Hellenistic culture to permeate the church. The lax morals of the church in Corinth led Paul to write, ” It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that even pagans do not tolerate: A man is sleeping with his father’s wife. And you are proud! Shouldn’t you rather have gone into mourning and have put out of your fellowship the man who has been doing this?” 1Corinthians 5:1-2 NIV.

You know they were just so cool that they could allow these types of things to go on and even seemed to boast about their tolerance of it and God’s Grace being poured out all the more. So Paul was not just speaking to the Romans about some supercilious argument. No he had been required to exercise his Apostolic authority time and time again to deal with false teachers and false doctrine in the churches he had established.

V.6 “May it never be! For otherwise, how will God judge the world?”

This is Paul’s answer to the false doctrine of more sin, more Grace. Let’s sin so His Grace abounds. I find it hard to not contend with so-called church Leaders who try to avoid the issue about judgement, but do not be deceived God is not Santa Claus. And even Santa was known to give some people a lump of coal.

V.7 “But if through my lie the truth of God abounded to His glory, why am I also still being judged as a sinner?”

In my life I’ve heard a lot of great testimonies of how God has changed people’s lives and I’ve heard a few tall tales as well. I remember this one guy, he claimed to be a Jewish Rabbi and he even wore his yarmulke (in Yiddish, kippah in Hebrew, a hemispherical cap) to church. Oh how everyone just thought it was great that this rabbi had become a Christian. In no time at all he was a teacher in the church and developed his own ministry at a large well attended church. The only problem was that he was not a rabbi. He wasn’t even Jewish and sometime later his wife wrote a book exposing him. But some could argue, through his lie so many people got saved, but how many people were led astray and the name of God was blasphemed by those whom we are commissioned to take the gospel to.

There is also a very famous teacher of Bible prophesy, he’s on TV as often as he can, writes books and he’s always claiming some insider information from NASA or someone in the Government about aliens. He claimed that the face that was seen on Mars was the aliens gathering and that they’re actually demons waiting to come back to earth. You know these types have always been around and most likely always will be, but what damage they do to the Truth with their lies.

“For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may be recompensed for his deeds in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.”
2 Corinthians 5:10

V.8 “And why not say (as we are slanderously reported and as some claim that we say), “Let us do evil that good may come”? Their condemnation is just.”

Paul did preach a gospel of Grace and that God’s Grace was sufficient for us, but there are those who will pervert this and any other teaching to draw people away from The Lord and make disciples of themselves.

Therefore, beloved, since you look for these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, spotless and blameless, and regard the patience of our Lord as salvation; just as also our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given him, wrote to you, as also in all his letters, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which the untaught and unstable distort, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures, to their own destruction.”
2 Peter 3:14-16

V.9 “What then? Are we better than they? Not at all; for we have already charged that both Jews and Greeks are all under sin.”

So we are all under sin and it doesn’t make any difference if you’re a Jew or a Gentile, we are all sinners. A spiritual application for the Church might be, it doesn’t matter if you were born in the church, nursed in the pews or came to church as an adult, we are all under sin.

“for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus;” Romans 3:23-24

V.10 “as it is written,…”

Paul starts to quote from the Psalms and these quotes are mostly taken from the Greek Septuagint.

(3:10-12) Psalms 14:1-3; 53:1-3 Greek version.

“THERE IS NONE RIGHTEOUS, NOT EVEN ONE;
11 THERE IS NONE WHO UNDERSTANDS,
THERE IS NONE WHO SEEKS FOR GOD;
12 ALL HAVE TURNED ASIDE, TOGETHER THEY HAVE BECOME USELESS;
THERE IS NONE WHO DOES GOOD,
THERE IS NOT EVEN ONE.”

(3:13) Psalms 5:9 Greek version.

13 “THEIR THROAT IS AN OPEN GRAVE”

(3:14) Palms 10:7 Greek version.

14 “WHOSE MOUTH IS FULL OF CURSING AND BITTERNESS”

(3:15-17) Isaiah 59:7-8. Hebrew version.

15 “THEIR FEET ARE SWIFT TO SHED BLOOD,
16 DESTRUCTION AND MISERY ARE IN THEIR PATHS,
17 AND THE PATH OF PEACE THEY HAVE NOT KNOWN.”

(3:18) Ps 36:1. Hebrew version.

18 “THERE IS NO FEAR OF GOD BEFORE THEIR EYES.”

V.19 Now we know that whatever the Law says, it speaks to those who are under the Law, so that every mouth may be closed and all the world may become accountable to God; 20 because by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified in His sight; for through the Law comes the knowledge of sin.

You can think of the relationship between the Law and sin this way, think of a shiny, new, red Corvette or some dream house or vacation you always wanted to take. Now are you thinking of those things? Can you just turn it off. Well you might, but when I think of a red Corvette I see it in my mind. If I had never seen one I would not be able to want one. That is how the Law is. It was the Law that led Paul to know of sin.

“for until the Law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law.” Romans 5:13

There are always those people who say thing like, when I get to heaven I’m going to have it out with God or something like that. Well every mouth will be closed! People seem to be so disrespectful of authorities and God as well. Like we have something to say to Him about how our lives have turned out. We will all be without excuse and no flesh will be justified in His sight.

So if not by the letter of the Law, but by Grace and His Law of Love. Christ said, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength and you shall love your neighbor as yourself” (Mark 12:30-31). If we follow Christ’s command, we cannot break any aspect of the Ten Commandments, nor any aspect of God’s morality.

May the One God our Father, His Son Jesus the Christ and their Holy Spirit be with you all the days of your lives. May His strong-arm comfort you, may His grace and mercy be sufficient for you and may it give us the peace of God Almighty.

Agape,
Norm
