The Son Could Do Nothing of His Own Initiative

When I say that Jesus the Christ, the Son of God according to the Spirit and the Son of David according to the flesh could do nothing on His own prior to the Holy Spirit descending and remaining on Him, people get quite upset with me. I know that I’m not a great communicator or gifted speaker, but I have spent over forty years reading and studying the Word. He is my Master and I am His humble slave and I am not ashamed of the gospel for it is the power of God to salvation to anyone who believes. But we must believe in the Truth of the gospel, we need to study to show ourselves approved, a workman that needs not to be ashamed rightly interpreting the Word of God. So what does the Word have to say about Himself and His mission?
30 “I can do nothing on My own initiative. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is just, because I do not seek My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.
31 “If I alone testify about Myself, My testimony is not true. 32 There is another who testifies of Me, and I know that the testimony which He gives about Me is true. John 5:30-32 NASB.

19 Therefore Jesus answered and was saying to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, these things the Son also does in like manner. 20 For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself is doing; and the Father will show Him greater works than these, so that you will marvel. John 5:19-20 NASB.

Praise be to God our Father that His Only begotten Son Jesus the Christ did not do anything of His own initiative or will, but was obedient to the point of death, yes death on the cross. That He did not take the crown without the cross when it was offered to Him by the ruler of this world. The prince and power of the air who tempted Christ at His weakest moments. All the kingdoms of the world were and are his to give to whom he chooses to give them to if they will only serve him and worship him, but our Lord knew him to be a liar, the father of lies and accuser of the brethren who accuses them day and night to God. When our Lord was in the garden He put it all in perspective, not My will be done, but Yours.

Now God the Father made Him a little lower than the angels. He made him human, he made Him flesh so that we might have a High Priest who can sympathize with our weakness for He lived as a man. He was hungry, tired, thirsty and maybe even indignant and angry. But He did not think of His own interests, but He thought of the interests of others.

4 do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others. 5 Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. 8 Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus EVERY KNEE WILL BOW, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Philippians 2:4-10 NASB.

Now concerning the Triunity of the Godhead I am convinced that there is an overwhelming amount of scripture that clearly states, All praise be to God our Father and our Lord Jesus the Christ. Now the Comforter the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of God, the Spirit of Christ was and is a part of the Godhead, but He is Spirit. Christ prayed to the Father so that He would not leave us orphaned and that the Father would send the Spirit to come along side of us, to seal us, to indwell us and to be upon us to enable His disciples to do His good deeds on this earth. To be His hands and feet, to take His gospel to the ends of the earth and proclaim victory over death.

May the One God our Father, His Son Jesus the Christ and their Holy Spirit be with you all the days of your life.
